According to the judging panel, highly effective and strategic grant programming contributed to Dorset's Community Foundation winning the prestigious ‘Funder of the Year Award', sponsored by the Charity Bank. The annual award recognises outstanding grant making and innovation amongst charitable trusts, and was won against stiff competition from other funding bodies such as Comic Relief, Lloyds TSB and the Big Lottery Fund.
The Community Foundation's day to day work involves managing and administering charitable Foundation Funds and grant making programmes on behalf of individuals, companies and other organisations. As a result, the Community Foundation has become one of Dorset's major funding bodies, and distributed grants valued at more than £500,000 during 2010-2011.
This money has benefited several hundred charities and local community groups across the County, many of whom provide vital services and support to vulnerable children and adults affected by disability, poverty or social exclusion.
The Community Foundation provides independent advice and professional guidance to individual donors, solicitors and accountants on creating personalised philanthropy plans and grant-making programmes. This enables individuals and companies to effectively support the charities and causes they care about, verify the credentials of charities and organisations they might wish to fund, and arrange ‘secret millionaire' escorted charity visits.
The award came as a complete surprise to the staff and volunteers of the Community Foundation. Tina Baker, Chief Executive of the Community Foundation said; "We are delighted to have won the prestigious Funder of the Year Award, particularly as much of our work is done at a discreet level on behalf of Dorset's secret millionaires and local businesses. We are privileged that the Foundation Funds we administer, enable us to fund amazing charities that help to transform lives and strengthen our local community."
