Community fund offers grants to groups making life better for people

GRANTS of up to £4,000 are available to voluntary groups and charities working to improve the lives of people living in their communities thanks to the continuing partnership between Dorset Community Foundation and Wessex Water.

The Wessex Water Foundation Community Fund is part of the water and sewage company’s mission to fund projects which bring people together to build stronger communities. Since 2020 it has provided grants of at least £500,000 a year to projects across the Wessex Water region.

Grants Manager Ellie Maguire said: “The fund aims to fund work supporting people most in need to build stronger, more resilient communities. This could include support for people in financial difficulty or who lack access to services, and work taking place in areas of multiple deprivation or rural isolation.

“It can also fund projects helping people manage or avoid debt and provide education in money management and household budgeting skills. This could include raising awareness and take up of utility affordability support, such as the Wessex Water schemes, among those who need it most.”

Last year the fund awarded more than £70,000 to 22 groups across Dorset. Among the recipients was Creative Kids in Boscombe, which was awarded £3,900 to run weekly ukelele lessons for youngsters and their parents. Founder Cary Lightfoot said the group ran a popular pilot last year and that the experience of parents and grandparents supporting each other had been beneficial to both.

“With children spending too much time on a screen and parents being busy, this is really good for mental health and wellbeing,” she said. “When you spend time with your child and you learn an instrument with them is really positive.

We are looking forward to seeing some brilliant projects that improve the quality of life for people in communities all over the county

ASCape in Bridport, which supports children and families with autism, will use a £3,750 grant to run monthly family sessions. Co-director Claire Cameron said offering sessions where the children can relax will bring them new opportunities. Through these inclusive activities they can try new things, build friendships, and feel accepted without needing to conform to typical behavioural expectations,” she said “This supportive setting helps reduce social anxiety, allowing children to feel happier, more confident, and secure.”

Wessex Water Group Head of Community Engagement Kirsty Scarlett said: “We are pleased to be able to work with Dorset Community Foundation and their local panel to fund projects that have so much impact for local communities who need it most.

“Through our Community Fund, we’re delighted to be able to continue to support the communities we serve and that reflect the fantastic diversity of our region.”

Dorset Community Foundation Chief Executive Grant Robson said: “We are very thankful to Wessex Water for continuing to support communities in Dorset through this fund.

“We are looking forward to seeing some brilliant projects that improve the quality of life for people in communities all over the county.”
